Plans to convert the Grade II-listed Chequers Inn on St Mary’s Street in the Eynesbury district of St Neots into a three-bedroom dwelling have been granted approval.
The pub, which closed in 2021 due to financial pressures, has remained vacant following two earlier refusals.
Planning officers noted that the building lies in a predominantly residential area and attempts to market it as a pub had failed. The approved scheme includes a like-for-like replacement of windows and doors, and the local conservation team raised no objections, confirming that the building’s character will be preserved. Some nearby residents supported the change, arguing the vacant building risked becoming an eyesore. The council has stated that the conversion will maintain the heritage value of the structure while returning it to constructive use.
