Drivers across Cambridgeshire are being urged to give their vehicles a winter once-over as police highlight the risks posed by colder, darker conditions on the roads.
Cambridgeshire Constabulary has launched its annual winter checks campaign, aimed at reducing collisions and breakdowns caused by poorly maintained vehicles during the colder months.
As part of National Road Safety Week, Casualty Reduction Officer PC Adrian Boddington and his team spoke to more than 300 people at pop-up stalls. Officers encouraged motorists to carry out basic safety checks before every journey and reminded them how routine maintenance can help prevent accidents.
The team also met with more than 500 children to discuss key road safety issues, including drink-driving, speeding, e-scooter use and keeping bikes secure.
PC Boddington said winter brings “extra challenges, from icy roads to reduced visibility,” adding that a well-maintained vehicle “can make all the difference”.
He said:
“Simple checks on tyre tread, windscreen wash, dashboard warnings and working lights can prevent breakdowns and even save lives. We’re asking drivers to take a few minutes before every journey to make sure their vehicle is safe and ready for the conditions.”
To help drivers remember what to look for, police are promoting the FLOWER checklist:
-
Fuel – Do you have enough to reach your destination?
-
Lights – Are headlights, brake lights and indicators all working?
-
Oil – Check levels when the engine is cold.
-
Water – Top up coolants, lubricants and washer fluid.
-
Electrics – Make sure the battery is in good health, especially in cold weather.
-
Rubber – Inspect tyres for tread depth, pressure and damage, and check wiper blades.
The Constabulary says taking a few simple steps now could help prevent avoidable breakdowns and keep everyone safer on Cambridgeshire’s roads this winter.
