A man who crashed his van in St Neots before fleeing the scene and later claiming it had been stolen has been banned from driving for 14 months.
Daniel Cawley, 25, of Paxton Hill, Great Paxton, crashed his white Ford van into parked cars in Huntingdon Street at around 9pm on Wednesday, 30 April.
Witnesses said he was slurring his words before walking off towards Great Paxton. Less than an hour later, Cawley phoned police claiming that when he had “closed his curtains to go to sleep” he noticed his van was missing and believed it had been stolen.
Officers quickly discovered the truth after a member of the public filmed the crash, showing Cawley getting out of the driver’s side. When police arrived at his home, he failed a breath test and was arrested.
At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (24 September), Cawley admitted drink driving and obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty. He was disqualified for 14 months and fined £80.
PC Charles Peters, who investigated, said:
“Cawley crashed his vehicle, fled the scene, and attempted to mislead officers by providing a false report. He should have remained at the scene because inquiries quickly revealed the truth.”
