Cyclist banned after being caught whilst over drink-drive limit

Eynesbury man banned from roads after being caught over limit on modified bike.

A St Neots man has been banned from the roads after he was caught riding an adapted bicycle while more than twice the legal alcohol limit.

Police stopped 27-year-old Tomas Matulis on Cromwell Road, St Neots, on Tuesday 21 October after noticing the bike he was on wasn’t being pedalled. Officers found the bicycle had been modified with an engine, effectively turning it into a motor vehicle.

When they spoke to Matulis, of Flint Way in Eynesbury, officers reported a strong smell of alcohol. A roadside breath test showed a reading of 93 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath — the legal limit is 35.

Matulis was arrested and later charged with drink driving, driving without insurance and driving without a valid licence.

He appeared at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (6 November), where he pleaded guilty to all offences. Magistrates disqualified him from driving for 20 months and ordered him to pay a £230 fine.

Police say the case highlights the risks of using modified vehicles on public roads, particularly while under the influence of alcohol.
