Cyclists in Bedford are set to benefit from a seasonal refresh of the cycle shelter in Harpur Square, Horne Lane.
The shelter, which was funded by the Government’s £1 million Town Deal Accelerator Fund and is now managed by Bedford Borough Council’s Passenger Transport and Sustainable Travel Team, provides a secure space for people to store their bikes while visiting the town centre.
More than 1,000 cyclists have already registered to use the facility, with users praising its convenience and security. One said:
“It’s fantastic to have the shelter available when I cycle into town. It feels much more secure leaving my bike in there, and the registration process was really simple. I now just open the app, touch the screen, and the door unlocks.”
Another regular user added:
“When riding into town with my son, we love using the safe and secure shelter. It’s so easy to use and right in the town centre!”
As part of the current refresh, the council’s street cleansing team is giving the area a thorough clean, with window cleaning and new signage also being added. A new poster has been placed on the front door to raise awareness of the facility.

The council has also introduced a new registration process. Once registered, users will receive login details within seven working days to access the shelter through the OneKey app.
Councillor Nicola Gribble, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said:
“This cycle shelter offers Bedford’s cyclists a safe, secure, and weather-protected facility right in the heart of town. This maintenance and refreshed registration system underlines our commitment to supporting sustainable travel. We encourage all cycle commuters heading into town to register and make the most of this great resource.”
The Harpur Square cycle shelter is free to use and open to all registered cyclists. The What3Words location is ///bikes.safe.town.
Cyclists, residents, and visitors are being encouraged to take advantage of the facility and help keep Bedford moving sustainably.
