Central Bedfordshire Council is supporting a national campaign during National Adoption Week (20–25 October) aimed at challenging myths and misconceptions about who can adopt.
New figures show a 12% drop in the number of families coming forward across the country. In Central Bedfordshire, seven children are currently waiting to be adopted, including siblings hoping to stay together and one child who has been waiting more than two years to find a permanent home.
A new survey by You Can Adopt found that almost nine in ten prospective parents (86%) worried they needed a “perfect home” to be approved for adoption. In reality, more than two fifths (41%) of adoptive parents live in homes with two bedrooms or fewer, two thirds (65%) don’t have a garden, and a quarter (25%) live in rented accommodation.
Cllr Steve Owen, Executive Member for Children’s Services, said adoption is about providing love and stability, not perfection.
“Adoption is about offering love, stability, and a sense of belonging – not about having the biggest house or the perfect setup,” he said. “Children waiting for adoption need families who can offer love, commitment and the right support, not perfection. Every child deserves the chance to grow up feeling secure and valued, and there are children here in our community waiting for that opportunity.”
