As National Volunteers’ Week (2–8 June) begins, Cambridgeshire’s Chief Constable Nick Dean has paid tribute to the many volunteers who support local policing.
Volunteers play a vital role in policing across Cambridgeshire, from Special Constables patrolling alongside regular officers to those supporting victims, mentoring cadets, or ensuring the welfare of people in custody. Their contribution helps strengthen ties between the force and the communities it serves.
While Special Constables are among the most visible, committing at least four hours a week and holding full police powers, the force also relies on Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs), scrutiny panel members, and cadet leaders. The force is currently recruiting for cadet leaders and ICVs in Peterborough to help support detainee welfare and guide young people.
Chief Constable Nick Dean said: “I want to whole-heartedly thank our volunteers for the work they do – not just this week, but every week.”
Citizens in Policing constable Emma Wilkinson added: “There are so many ways to get involved – there’s something for everyone.”
Volunteers’ Week, launched in 1984, is a national celebration of the people who give their time to help others.
