Cambridgeshire’s new Chief Constable, Simon Megicks, has responded to the tragic attack at a synagogue in Manchester earlier today, in which two people lost their lives and three others were seriously injured.
The attack occurred in Manchester’s Crumpsall area on Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days of the Jewish calendar, when Jewish people fast, pray, and seek forgiveness.
Reports suggest multiple people were stabbed, and police believe the suspect has been shot. Confirmation is pending due to suspicious items found on his body, and army bomb disposal experts are on the scene.
National figures have expressed shock at the incident. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer described himself as “appalled” and is returning early from Denmark to chair a Cobra emergency committee meeting.
Locally, Chief Constable Megicks reassured residents that Cambridgeshire Police are ready to respond. He said:
“We have already responded locally, and there are additional resources at synagogues across the county,”
He also emphasized the force’s ability to assist nationally, adding:
“We will support more broadly, whether it’s a call from the Prime Minister, Greater Manchester Police, or anywhere else — we’re ready to support”
Speaking to Black Cat Radio, he addressed local communities, urging anyone with concerns to reach out.
“To our local communities, the police are here for you, and if you’ve got any issues, please let us know and we will respond.”
