Police have confirmed a man has died following a major incident at The Chequers pub in Wootton on Friday (19 September).
Officers were called shortly after 10.15am to concerns for the welfare of a man at a property in Hall End Road. Emergency services attended, and shortly afterwards a fire broke out at the building.
Police said specialist officers, including negotiators, were deployed after receiving information that the man was in possession of a crossbow. Extensive efforts were made to ensure the safety of all at the scene.
At around 12.45pm, the man exited the premises before sustaining what police described as self-inflicted injuries. He was taken to hospital but died on Sunday (21 September). His next of kin have been informed.
Bedfordshire Police confirmed the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), in line with standard procedure.
Enquiries remain ongoing.
