Bedfordshire Police Urges Care and Caution Ahead of Halloween and Bonfire Night

Bedfordshire Police is preparing for one of its busiest times of the year as Halloween and Bonfire Night approach.

While these celebrations bring fun for many, they can also cause distress — particularly for the elderly, vulnerable individuals, and pets.

The force typically sees an increase in anti-social behaviour during this period and is encouraging everyone to celebrate responsibly and respectfully, being mindful of how their actions may affect others.

Superintendent Lee Haines said:
“We want everyone to enjoy the festivities, but we also ask the public to do this in a safe, respectful and legal way. What may be fun for some can be frightening or disruptive for others.

Our officers will be out across the county to ensure communities feel safe and supported.

Our control room teams are also working incredibly hard during this busy period. We are encouraging people to consider whether it is a genuine emergency or if the police are the most suitable agency to assist before calling 999.

Please help us by only calling if it’s a policing issue — this ensures we can respond quickly to those who need us most.”

Police Advice for Residents

Bedfordshire Police will be increasing patrols and working closely with local partners to respond swiftly to incidents and provide reassurance to residents.

If you need to report a non-urgent crime, please contact police via the online reporting tool or call 101.

Call 999 only in emergencies, or if a crime is in progress and police assistance is needed immediately.

If you’re unsure whether your situation qualifies for 999 attention, visit the Bedfordshire Police Contact Page for guidance.

🎃 Halloween Safety Tips

  • Be respectful of others and avoid damaging property.

  • If you don’t want visitors, display a “No Trick or Treating” sign near your door or window.

  • Report concerns via 101 or the Bedfordshire Police website — and remember to call 999 only if a crime is in progress.

  • Do not make hoax calls — these delay genuine emergencies.

  • If you’re planning a night out, please remember: alcohol is never an excuse for anti-social or violent behaviour.

🎆 Firework Safety Tips

  • Fireworks cannot be sold to anyone under 18. Traders risk losing their licences if caught selling to minors.

  • It’s illegal to set off fireworks during night hours, except on Bonfire Night (5 November) and certain cultural celebrations like Diwali.

  • Fireworks may only be sold at licensed times of the year.

  • If you know of anyone illegally using or selling fireworks, report it to police — it’s a criminal offence.

  • Offenders may face fines or imprisonment for illegal use or sale.
