National Highways will close the A1 in both directions this weekend as part of the ongoing £1 billion A428 improvement project.
The closure, which runs from 9pm on Friday 7 November to 5am on Monday 10 November 2025, covers the section between Tempsford and the Black Cat Roundabout. It is necessary to allow the installation of a new culvert close to the A1 carriageway.
The A428 scheme, now more than halfway through and costing around £1 million per day, will eventually deliver a new dual carriageway linking the Black Cat Roundabout to Caxton Gibbet.
Diversions:
-
Northbound: Leave the A1 at Tempsford, continue north on Tempsford and St Neots Road, then head west along the A428 to rejoin the A1.
-
Southbound: Follow the same route in the opposite direction.
Drivers are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow diversion signs.
