In many schools today, the emphasis is on inclusion. Every child gets a sticker, a certificate, or a well-done for joining in. The idea is to build confidence, avoid disappointment, and ensure no one feels left out. But is that the right approach?
Others argue that learning how to win – and lose – graciously is an important life lesson. After all, isn’t sport about challenge, resilience, and sometimes, competition? Some believe that removing winners and losers takes away the very spirit of sports day.
So, what do you think?
- Should sports day have clear winners and losers, or is it better to celebrate effort equally?
- Does competition motivate children, or risk knocking their confidence?
- How was it done at your school – and do you think they got it right?
