The R101 crash occurred on October 5, 1930, when the British airship R101, one of the largest airships ever built, crashed near Beauvais, France, during its maiden overseas flight to India. Designed as part of Britain’s ambitious airship programme to connect the Empire by air, the R101 was seen as a symbol of national pride and technological progress. However, structural flaws, poor weather, and political pressure to launch before it was ready led to disaster. The airship struck the ground and burst into flames, killing 48 of the 54 people on board, including senior government officials and engineers. The tragedy ended Britain’s airship programme and marked a turning point in public confidence in lighter-than-air travel.

To mark the event Trevor Monk arranged for a series of talks on the airship itself, and the history of Cardington airship works. Keith Ritchie was there to find out more.....

Norman Cross Prison, just south of Peterborough, was built in 1796–97 as Britain struggled to contain the sheer number of captives taken during the French Revolutionary Wars. Designed to hold up to 7,000 men, it was laid out like a small town, with wooden barrack blocks, a hospital, chapel, and a market where prisoners traded handicrafts with local people. Most of those confined were French sailors and soldiers, guarded by a detachment of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. Conditions were harsh, with outbreaks of disease and a high death rate in the early years, though the camp became known for the remarkable craftsmanship of prisoners, who carved bone models and intricate objects later sold in London. Norman Cross remained in use until 1814, when peace returned with France. Today, little remains of the site, but a monument erected in 1914 commemorates those who died there.

Roger Leivers, shares details about a special event this Saturday at St Mary’s Church, Godmanchester. The occasion celebrates a sapling from Hiroshima—one of only 147 survivor tree offshoots worldwide, descendants of a tree that survived the atomic bomb. Part of the UN’s Green Legacy Hiroshima, the event features talks on the German atom scientists once held prisoner at Farm Hall Place, in Godmanchester where secret SIS bugging equipment was found. Local vicar Rev David Busk will share his experiences from Nagasaki, and the community nursery manager will explain the tree’s history. The sapling will also be blessed in a free event starting at 7 pm.
