Central Bedfordshire Council approves new Waste Strategy 2026–2051

Central Bedfordshire Council has approved its new Waste Strategy 2026–2051, aiming to reduce waste, increase reuse, recycling, and composting, and ensure cost-efficient and compliant services. The decision was made at the Council’s Executive meeting on Tuesday 6 January 2026.

During September and October 2025, residents, councillors, town and parish councils, and local groups shared their views on the draft strategy. Feedback was gathered online, at six in-person library events, through an online session, and via the Youth Parliament, with almost 750 responses received.

Around 89% of participants supported the strategy’s main goals, which include cutting non-recyclable waste, boosting reuse, recycling and composting, and ensuring services remain cost-effective and compliant.

The consultation also highlighted strong support for improving reuse and recycling opportunities at Household Waste Recycling Centres and for working closely with local communities to reduce waste.

Currently, Central Bedfordshire recycles, reuses, or composts 46% of household waste, with most remaining black bin waste converted into energy. The new strategy lays out how the council plans to do even better, offering a clear vision for the future and practical steps to achieve it.

Everyone can play their part — each small action combines to make a big difference. Together, we can create a cleaner, greener Central Bedfordshire.”
