A man who assaulted his wife before ramming a police car in a desperate attempt to escape has been jailed for 20 months.
Nicholas Hazell, 42, attacked the victim before pulling her into a car in Trumpington Road, Cambridge, at around 9.10pm on 5 September.
Police were called to reports of the assault and tried to stop Hazell’s vehicle, but he ignored officers and drove towards King’s Parade, where he was blocked by barriers.
Hazell rammed the police car behind him, turned onto the pavement close to pedestrians, and made off.
About an hour later, he was spotted driving on the A14 by other officers, who pursued him onto the M11, where he reached speeds of around 90mph before being stopped between junctions nine and ten.
He was arrested and found to be disqualified from driving and uninsured.
At Huntingdon Law Courts on 23 October, Hazell, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 20 months in prison after pleading guilty to:
-
Criminal damage
-
Dangerous driving
-
Driving while disqualified
-
Driving without insurance
He also pleaded guilty to assault, for which he received an additional five-week sentence at Huntingdon Magistrates’ Court on 28 October — to be served concurrently.
Hazell has also been banned from driving for four years and ten months.
Detective Constable Michael Hitchings, who investigated, said:
“Hazell put innocent people at risk by trying to avoid justice. It’s never sensible to flee from police, and the sentence shows how seriously the court treated his reckless actions. The assault on his wife was also equally appalling.”
