Drivers planning on using the Black Cat Roundabout this weekend are being reminded of significant road closures across the weekend as major works are carried out to improve the junction and traffic flow.
The £1 billion A428 upgrade project, which is estimated to cost around £1 million per day, will see a major closure in place from 9pm Friday evening (5th) until 5am Monday Morning (8th).
National Highways has confirmed that the following stretches will be closed across the weekend:
-
A1 northbound between Tempsford and the Black Cat roundabout
-
A421 westbound between the Black Cat roundabout and Renhold
-
Bedford Road in both directions between Roxton Garden Centre and the Black Cat roundabout
The closures are necessary to carry out work on the A421 westbound, restoring it to two lanes. Once complete, traffic will be able to access the roundabout from both lanes, removing the need for merging and improving the flow of vehicles through the junction.
National Highways urged drivers to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra time for delays, and follow diversion routes while the work is carried out.
A421 westbound diversion:
- travel south on the A1
- take the A603 towards Bedford
- re-join the A421 at Cardington interchange
A1 northbound diversion:
- leave the A1 northbound at Tempsford
- head north on Barford Road towards St Neots
- re-join the A1 northbound at Wyboston.
