Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, is amongst those to have responded following the multiple stabbings on a train at Huntingdon train station on Saturday night.
A major police incident is ongoing this evening after multiple people were stabbed on a train near Huntingdon, prompting a large emergency services response and significant disruption across the rail network.
Police were called at 7:39pm with reports of several people being injured on board a train travelling through the area. Armed officers stopped the service at Huntingdon Railway Station, where two men were arrested. A number of victims have been taken to hospital. Their conditions are not yet known.
The A1307 remains closed as it approaches Huntingdon town centre while emergency services continue to respond.
Large-scale emergency response
The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed it mobilised a major operation.
“We were called at 7.38pm to reports that multiple people had been stabbed on a train.
We mobilised a large-scale response… including numerous ambulances, tactical commanders, our Hazardous Area Response Team and critical care teams including the air ambulance.
We can confirm we have transported multiple patients to hospital. Further updates will be issued by British Transport Police.”
Ben Obese-Jecty, MP for Huntingdon, said he went straight to the station when he bacane aware of the news to liase with emergency services, adding:
“My thoughts are with the victims of this terrible incident and those involved. I’m awaiting further information.”
Political response
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the attack as “deeply concerning”, adding:
“My thoughts are with all those affected and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response. Anyone in the area should follow the advice of the police.”
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander MP said she was receiving ongoing updates:
“My thoughts are with those affected by this shocking incident on a train near Huntingdon. We are working closely with the British Transport Police.”
Kemi Badenoch, Leader of the Conservative Party, wrote online:
“Deeply disturbed by the reports emerging from Huntingdon… my thoughts are with all those affected including the emergency responders at the scene.”
Rail operators react
The incident has resulted in the closure of all lines between Stevenage and Peterborough, causing delays and widespread cancellations.

LNER Managing Director David Horne said:
“Our immediate concern is for the welfare of our customers and crew who are on board. My thoughts are with the victims. Thank you to the emergency services and railway colleagues who are responding.”
RMT Union General Secretary Eddie Dempsey added:
“The thoughts of everyone at RMT are with the victims, train crew and all the emergency services dealing with this unfolding incident.”
Thameslink suspensions
All Thameslink trains between Horsham and Peterborough are suspended. No trains are currently serving:
- Arlesey
- Biggleswade
- Sandy
- St Neots
- Huntingdon
- Peterborough
Passengers are being asked to seek assistance at staffed stations or use help points if travelling from unstaffed locations.
Police appeal
British Transport Police is leading the investigation. Anyone with information is urged to report it online quoting incident 495, or call 101 if internet access is unavailable.
