Huntingdonshire District Council has today launched a new initiative to help people feel safer when enjoying a night out — by championing the national ‘Ask for Angela’ scheme.
The campaign is designed to support anyone who feels unsafe, harassed or threatened while out in bars, pubs, restaurants, or other licensed venues. Anyone in need of help can discreetly approach staff and “Ask for Angela” — a code phrase that prompts trained staff to step in and offer immediate, discreet assistance.
Participating venues display the official ‘Ask for Angela’ poster to signal that help is available. Staff are trained to recognise the request and take action, such as finding a safe space or arranging a safe way home.
The council is encouraging all licensed venues in the district to join the scheme through the Huntingdonshire Businesses Against Crime (HBAC) network. While participation is voluntary, ‘Ask for Angela’ is now referenced in the council’s draft licensing policy and will be included in future inspections to ensure awareness and compliance.

Cllr Stephen Ferguson, Executive Councillor for Resident Services and Corporate Performance, said:
“Everyone deserves to feel safe when enjoying our towns and the local night-time economy. Initiatives like ‘Ask for Angela’ not only help protect residents and visitors but also support local businesses by creating welcoming and trusted venues. A vibrant and safe night-time economy brings both social and economic benefits to our communities, and we’re proud to work alongside our partners to make this a reality in Huntingdonshire.”
Today’s launch forms part of the Businesses Against Abuse (BAA) initiative — a broader effort to promote safety, raise awareness and prevent abuse across the district’s hospitality and leisure sector.
